AHL - Eleanor (nee Fiege). It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife and mother on Thursday, January 23, 2003 at the age of 74 years. Eleanor was born on July 15, 1928 in Markinch, SK. She is survived by her husband of fifty-one years, Marvin, and her children, Terri, Patti (Tom) Bell of Edmonton, and Barry. Eleanor is also survived by her sisters: Elsie Thurmeier and Carol (Bill) Kevol of Calgary; sisters-in-law: Clara Fiege, Irma Fiege, Leona (Ernest) Fry, Fran Ahl, and Phyllis Smith; brothers-in-law: Allan (Carol), Ken (Grace); and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. Eleanor is predeceased by her parents, Godfred and Augustina Fiege; her brothers: Kasper, Carl, and Erhardt; her sister Lydia (Walter) Hufnagel; and her brother-in-law, John Thurmeier. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 27, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue with Vicar David Haberstock officiating. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park. ALGERA - Vicki (nee Staruiala) VICKI_After a valiant, nearly 20 year battle with cancer, our dear wife, mother and grandmother Vicki is finally at peace. On Saturday, April 21st, 2007, she slipped away quietly with close family at her side. Vicki was born on March 16, 1921, in Markinch, Saskatchewan. Predeceased by her parents George and Efrusina Staruiala; infant daughter Kathleen Jane and first husband Philip Mintzler; brothers George, Nick and Danny; sisters Helen George, Anne Bogdan, Mary Duduman, Violet Pauly and Connie Sweeney; grandson Todd Williams; several brothers-in-law and nephews. Vicki is survived by her adoring husband Rein of Regina, daughter Patti (Len) Schmidt of Riverhurst, granddaughter Lana (John & daughter Arlene) Lavoie of Yellowknife; sisters Florence Neimor of Transcona, Evelene (Hilmer) Haatvedt of Calgary, Irene Ganne of Lethbridge, Kathleen Kyle of Regina and Frances Borrebach of Calgary; sisters-in-law Elizabeth Staruiala of Regina, Rikie (Cees) Severijn of the Netherlands; as well as many, many nieces and nephews. Vicki came to be a well known face around the city from her early years with Phil's Taxi to her partnership in Glo Uniform Co., through her time at Robert Simpson's followed by her years managing the Hotel Saskatchewan News Stand, and finally her ownership and operation of the McCallum Hill News Stand until her retirement. Vicki had a zest for life, and after her retirement she enjoyed volunteering, travelling and spending time with her many close friends. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit, and she loved to laugh. Always active and independent, Vicki led a very full and interesting life, and always had many a story to tell. The family would like to thank Dr. Carol Norman, Dr. Sandra Rayson, Dr. Linda Lee Nilson and the staff at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre for fighting the long battle alongside Vicki; and Dr. Clein and the nursing staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Pasqua Hospital for making her final days and hours as comfortable and easy as possible for all of us. Bless you all. Cremation Arrangements entrusted to Regina Memorial Gardens and Crematorium. A private interment of Vicki's ashes has been held at Riverside Memorial Park. In keeping with Vicki's wishes there will be no memorial service.
APPENHEIMER - Edwin "Ed" passed away peacefully at Weyburn General Hospital, February 6, 1999 after battling with cancer for the past few years, at the age of 77. Predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Theresa Appenheimer; three brothers: Leon, Frank and Ernest; sisters: Frieda, Elsie, Rose, Eva and Emma-Jean. He is survived by his wife, Jean of Midale; five children: sons: Allan (Angie) Appenheimer of Abbotsford, BC; and David of Lloydminster, AB; daughters: Betty (Rick) Mailhiot of Virden, MB; Teresa (Kerry) Leckie of Lloydminster, AB; and Heather Runje of Vancouver; seven grandchildren: Melissa, Terrice, Kellsey, Jake, Matthew, Aaron and Paige; brother Herb (Ruby) Appenheimer of Calgary; sister-in-law, Jean Appenheimer of Cupar; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was born in Markinch, SK and grew up on a mixed farm near there. He took most of his formal education at a small country school in Markinch, SK. On November 3, 1962 Ed married Jean Schick and their marriage was blessed with five children and lasted 36 years. Ed and Jean began their family in Southey, where they lost their home to a fire. Following this devastation, they moved to Pangman, Macoun, Midale and Weyburn. His quest for knowledge was his main passion and he loved to read, especially the hockey news. Ed was an avid sports fan, who thoroughly enjoyed watching hockey, football and baseball games. He was active in various associations such as Pro-Life, Healthy Horizons and local parent-teacher associations. Ed was a great supporter of agricultural causes and politically active with the Reform Party. Family gatherings with his 15 children and grandchildren were always a source of joy for Ed. Funeral service was held Tuesday, February 9 at 2:00 p.m. from First Baptist Church, Midale, with Pastor Dwayne Harms officiating. Interment followed in Westphalia Cemetery, Midale. Pallbearers were Wayne Appenheimer, Graham Haus, Grant Haus, Don Neuls, Gerald Blierot and Lynden Schick.
APPENHEIMER - Herbert W. "Herb" beloved husband of Rebecca "Ruby" Appenheimer (nee Silzer) passed away March 6, 2005 in Calgary at the age of 81 years. Herb was the youngest of the eleven children born to Jacob and Theresa Appenheimer (nee Uhl) of Markinch, SK. and the last of his family to pass away. Herb was a very friendly helpful person with a unique sense of humor. He was a devoted husband and father. He had an especially appreciative and caring attitude towards his wife Ruby in recent years. There was a special bond between them, partly created by the sharing of the music that they both loved. Herb is survived by his wife Ruby, their daughter Jan, Calgary; son Wade (Joanne), Ucluelet, BC; eight grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Jean Appenheimer, Virden, MB; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral will take place Friday, March 11th, 11:00 a.m. at McInnis & Holloway, Calgary.
BESSEY - Joan (nee Lipinski), November 26, 1920 September 9, 2007. The passing of Joan Bessey, age 86 years of Saskatoon, SK, occurred on Sunday, September 9, 2007, at St. Paul's Hospital. Joan is lovingly remembered by her sons, George Bessey of Rosetown and Cameron (Sylvie) Bessey of Odessa; grandchildren, Tracey (Cory) Uhrich, Dana (Steve) Bergerman, Greg (Katja) Bessey, Shane Bessey, Tikka Bessey and Tali Bessey; great-grandchildren, Josh, Brayden, and Brienne Uhrich, Hunter, Hannah, and Baily Bergerman and Simone Bessey. She is also survived by brothers, Ed (Eleanore) Lipinski, Joe (Helen) Lipinski; sisters, Millie (Gordon) Mitchell and Doris Thurmeier; as well as sisters-in-law, Evelyn (Ralph) Mills and Amy Bessey; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George Bessey Sr.; parents, Mary and Anton Lipinski; and daughter-in-law, Terry Bessey; brothers-in-law, Fred, Gordon, and Lloyd Bessey, Leo Thurmeier; and sisters-in-law, Madeline and Erma Bessey. Joan was born in Grayson, Saskatchewan and spent her childhood years on a farm near Markinch. When her family moved to Girvin, Joan went to work in Bladworth where she met and married George. Joan worked at the Exhibition grounds in a restaurant and at the Queen Street Residence so that George could complete his Bachelor of Education degree. She had a love of antiques and from 1973 to 1978 she instructed classes for the community college board on refinishing and reupholstering old furniture. Joan and George also spent a number of years working with the disabled at the Interlake Human Resources. She truly made a difference. The highlight of Joan's life was time spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, bingo and making her own jewelry. She also enjoyed chauffeuring the ladies from St. Volodymyr to and from many places around the city. Joan met some great friends throughout her life. She'll be remembered for her vibrant personality and her fierce independence. A Celebration of Joan's Life will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. at the Acadia Drive Funeral Chapel.
BLASER - Lyle Johnnie, January 14, 1945 - November 10, 2001. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Lyle in Quesnel, BC in his 56th year. Lyle was born in Regina, Sask., graduated from Markinch High School in 1962. Lyle was predeceased by his father John in 1990, sisters-in-law Eileen Blaser in 1990 and Katherine Lieb, 1999. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mary Ann of 33 years, his mother Grace Blaser, his brothers, Robert (Donna), Lawrence and Woodrow (Helena), his father and mother-in-law, John and Marguerite Gascher, brothers-in-law George (Lillian), John (Beth) and Marlin Lieb, numerous aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews. Memorial Service to be held Friday, November 30th at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's at Markinch, Sask.
BLASER - Norman Wilfred, faithful and patient father went home to be with his Lord and Saviour at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday September 1, 2001 at the age of 83 years 5 months. He taught us not only how to live but also how to die. His example of optimism and steadfast strength will not be soon forgotten by those that knew and loved him. Norman was predeceased by his beloved first wife Eleanor (1985); brother Eddy; sisters Eva and Beth. He is survived by his second wife Florence; son Wade (Sheryl), Paul (Katherine), Jill and Julia; daughters Ruth (Brenda); Joy (Brian), Joshua, Lucas, Adam and Rebekah; Juliann (Reg), Kenton and Braden; brothers Kasper and Lorrie. Farmer, husband, daddy, brother, "Papa" to his grandchildren; deeply loved and respected by all that knew him. Sustained by his faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. BOSCHE - Ida (nee Probst) died peacefully at Cupar, SK on May 1, 2001 at age 91. She was predeceased by John, her husband in 1991, and Edmund her oldest son in 1995. She is survived by three daughters and three sons; Ella (George) Balfour, Elsa (Dan) Stann, Sophie (Terry) Garvin, Harold (Barbara), Ron (Donalda), Lorenz and sister Ella Kurz and brother Adolf Probst. Ida was born February 9, 1910 in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan and along with her husband and infant daughter and siblings and mother immigrated to Canada in 1930. She was a skilled, knowledgeable farm woman and her and John farmed for fifty years in the Dilke, Southey, and Markinch area. Ida was a proud lady and that pride swelled as she shared stories of her children, 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Ida's love of the Lord was expressed in daily private worship. Her family sincerely thanks the staff at Shalom Nursing Home, Cupar, SK, for the nurturing of body and soul, which gave Ida a loving, respectful and comforting final conclusion to her last year of life. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 4, 2001 at 1:00 P.M. in Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Southey, SK with Pastor Linden Dressler officiating. Interment will follow in Southey Lutheran Cemetery. BRATUSHESKY - Mary (nee Schmidt). We are sad to announce the passing of Mary Bratushesky on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at the age of 82. Mary is predeceased by her husband Adolph in 1994; her parents Herman and Rose; her brothers John and Ed; and sister Josephine. She leaves to mourn her sons Jim (Linda), Conrad (Linda), grandchildren Brian and Stacey of Maple Ridge, Wayne (Karen), grandchildren Bryce and Cole; brothers Bill Schmidt, Allan (Pauline) Schmidt; sister Bertha Folstrum; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was born November 3, 1925 in Markinch, SK. She met and married Adolph in 1946. They lived in Manor, SK for a time before moving to Regina. Mary settled into city life and raising her boys. Mary always took great pride in her home and her cooking. You never left hungry. If she wasn't in the kitchen you could always find her in the garden. Mary moved to her north end apartment and became a regular on "Coffee Row" at the Northgate Mall, where we know she will be greatly missed by her friends. BRUCKER - Ida Magdalena, July 23, 1918 - March 23, 2002. Ida was predeceased by her parents Johann and Karolina, brothers and sisters; Karoline, Johann, Johanna, Wilhelmina, Adam, Anna, Marie, Rose, Carl, Martha, and Olga. Left to cherish her memory is her brother Frank Brucker and sister Elsie Cantelon both of Regina, SK, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ida was born the 10th child of Johann and Karolina Brucker and raised on a farm north of Markinch, SK. She attended school in Southey then at Bourneville school 1926-1932. During the depression; money was scarce so Ida traveled to Regina to find work. There she began to work at the "Blackhawk Cafe", then in 1944 started working at the Robert Simpson warehouse, eventually moving to the department store. Here Ida spent many years in the returns and gift-wrapping department and took much pride in her work there till her retirement. Ida was very fond of the many trips back to her home farm as well as special trips to Denver. CO. and Hamilton, ON. For many years Ida lived on 2222 Osler Street and became good friends with the Galenzowski's and many other tenants who lived there. Ida also took great pride in the way she presented herself! A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, with Pastor Bill Cantelon officiating. Interment to take place in Riverside Memorial Park.
CANTELON - Elsie (nee Brucker) Cantelon passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at the age of 84 years. Elsie was born March 3, 1924 to Johann and Karoline Brucker and raised on a farm north of Markinch, SK. She attended Bourneville School. She stayed on the farm to care for her aging parents before moving to Regina to work. While working at the Blackhawk Cafe she met and then married William Cantelon. Elsie enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening on the farm, attending church and word search books later on in life. Also her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren were the pride of her life. Elsie was known for her kind heart and gave mitts and toques away to neighbourhood children on cold winter days. Later in life she began to work outside of the home cleaning houses and working for the School Board. Elsie was one of twelve children, many who died at a young age. Those most dear to her were her sisters, Ida, Karoline, Martha, Olga and Rose as well as brothers, Frank and Carl, all who predeceased her. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, William (Joyce) and their children Benjamin and Braden; David (Lorna) Bradley; Melissa and her children Brandy, Dylan, Bradley; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. A special thank you goes to the caring staff at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home where Elsie lived the last years of her life. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, June 13, 2008 from 6:00 8:00 p.m. in Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2015 4th Avenue North with Pastor Terry Defoe officiating. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park.
DAVIES - Pauline "Tut" (nee Fenwick) passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 28, 2004 in Regina at the age of 82 years. Predeceased by her husband Roger; parents William and Henrietta; beloved aunt and uncle Charlotte and John Rigg; sister-in-law Martha Fenwick and nephew Stanley Fenwick. Tut is survived by her twin brothers Raymond Fenwick and his family; Roland (Flo) Fenwick and their family; cousin Dorothy Messner of Saskatoon. Pauline was born in Strasbourg and spent most of her adult life in the Markinch area. In accordance with Tut's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Instead the family will be celebrating Tut's life at a gathering at 204 Hector Crescent on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 from 1:00 4:00 p.m. Her friends are welcome to join us.
DERGES - Helen Emilie (nee Ursaki) of Regina passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 26, 2012. She was born September 3, 1923 at Markinch, Saskatchewan. Helen was predeceased by her husband David, parents Henry and Otillie; brothers Edward, Victor and Frank; sisters-in-law Anne Ursaki and Emma Ursaki; brother-in-law Ron Pasker; niece Janet Goudge and great-niece Anne Hastings. Helen is survived by her son Allan (Gayla) Derges and their children Adam (Ashley), Jana and Ray; daughter Ruth (Gary) Harris and her daughters Erica, Alyne and Martine Francis; daughter Lois (Sid) VanDerVelden and children Lee (Ryan) and Karen (Jon). In addition she has seven greatgrandchildren that she adored: Liam, Adyson, Jack, Fletcher, Sidney, Dexter and Grayson. Helen is also survived by her sisters Bertha (Art) Davis, Alma Pasker and brother Harold (Barbara) Ursaki; her sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Murray Fraser, many nieces, nephews and of course her many wonderful friends. Helen enjoyed a productive, cheerful and healthy life prior to a near fatal heart attack two years before her death. She struggled with losing her independence but made the best of her new 'home' at Pioneer Village. Those who cared for her at Pioneer Village enjoyed and marveled at her participation with every event available as much as her frail body could carry her. Nothing was ever impossible for her and she showed ingenuity in getting things just the way she wanted. She was tremendously organized and had a memory for dates and phone numbers; she was an outstanding and reliable resource. She kept her mind sharp by staying on top of current events and sports because it was important for her to engage in conversation as an active participant. Even up to the day she died she challenged herself with the jumble puzzle in the paper. Throughout her life, she loved to sing and participate in church and community choirs. She sang up until she moved to Pioneer Village in 2010 always finding a way even when it was difficult for her. Her social activities were plentiful and she will be missed by many. A Celebration of Helen's Life will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1909 Ottawa Street on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Lindsay Hognestad officiating. The family extends sincere appreciation to the staff on 3 East at Pioneer Village where she was taken care of with love and attention over the past two years.
FELPEL - Walter Victor Felpel, formerly of Markinch, SK, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2007 at the age of 77 years. Predeceased by his parents Gottfried and Annie; sisters, Eleanor, Helen and Evelyn, Walter is survived by his brother-in-law John Frei; nieces and nephews, Marjorie (Heath) Sparrow, James (Delores) Lacell, Marilyn Labonte, Audrey (Gary) Head, Judy Leclerg, Debbie Moulton, Laurel (Larry) Kane, Ross (Dee) Kane and Margo Kane; numerous great nieces and nephews; also, a very special thank you to a dear and close friend Raymond Voelpel, and a special thank you to the staff at Extendicare/ Parkside. Walter was born and raised in Markinch, where he also received his education. He farmed in the Markinch area all his life and then retired to Buena Vista in 1990. He returned back to Southey in 2003, residing in Pioneer Lodge. When his health failed him, he moved to Extendicare/Parkside, Regina in February 2007. He was a man who would help anyone out in a moment of need. He also drove school bus and served on the church board for many years. He was very active in the community. Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 13 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Markinch, SK with Rev. Larry Fry officiating. Interment in Bethlehem Cemetery.
FENWICK Lorraine (nee Thomson) aged 90 years of Moose Jaw, SK, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 15th, 2014 after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Zelda Thomson; her husband, Oliver; and brother, Len. Lorraine is survived by her children: Edward, Wade (Caroline), Laura (Calvin) and Tom (Brenda); grandchildren: Todd, Tara (Cory), Michael, Crystal (Tyler), Julie (Norm), Cheryl (Lee), Teresa (James), Krista (Robert), Kelsey (David); and her treasured great-grandchildren. Lorraine was born on July 18th, 1923 and raised on the family farm in Three Hills, Alberta. She graduated as a nurse in 1948 in Kamloops, BC and then returned to nurse in Alberta, where she met her mechanic husband Oliver Fenwick. In 1950 they were married and returned to the Fenwick family farm at Markinch, SK where they raised their four children until Oliver's passing in 1984. Lorraine then moved to Cupar, Regina and finally in 2002 moved to Moose Jaw which she grew to love. In keeping with Lorraine's wishes, a Private Family Service will be held. The family wishes to thank Moose Jaw Union Hospital for all of their compassionate care during mom's stay there.
FLAMAN - Adolph Marion. It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Adolph Marion Flaman. Adolph was born on the family farm, northeast of Southey, SK on May 31, 1925 to Jacob Flaman and Katherine Flaman (nee Burghardt). He has been predeceased by his wife, Evelyn (2006); brothers, Edward and Alexander and sister, Margaret (who all died in infancy), Jacob (Helga) who passed away in 2003 and Elizabeth (John Tetarenko) who passed away in 2006. He is survived by his brother, Leo (Sheila); his nieces, Kathy Hrenewich, Loretta Tetarenko and Christine Flaman and his nephews, Bernard and Mark Flaman. Following his father's move to Regina in 1948, Adolph took up farming north of Markinch. With failing health, he and Evelyn moved to Regina and lived on Princess Street until his health situation took him to Parkside Extendicare. After many years in Parkside his health improved somewhat and he took up residence first on Schemmer Bay in North Regina and then at the Trianon Residence. The last few years he has been cared for at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home. We would like to express thanks to all the people who have cared for Adolph over the last few years while he was at Santa Maria. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home Chapel, 4215 Regina Ave., Regina, SK, with Fr. Ken Koep as Celebrant. A private family interment will take place in Southey Cemetery, Southey, SK.
FLAMAN - Johanna (nee Yandel) Haider Flaman. We sadly announce that our loving mother Johanna's life's precious journey came to an end on April 27, 2010, in the Pasqua Hospital. She was predeceased by her parents Florian & Adolphina Yandel; husbands Martin Haider & Jacob Flaman; daughter Cecile (infancy); son Alphonso; son-in-law Jim; grandson Dale & several brothers & sisters. She is survived by her loving family Harold (Della), Grace, Frances (Steve), Evelyn, Linda (Ken), Paulette (Ian), Joanne (Guy) and daughter-in-law Corine (Don); 29 grandchildren; 66 great & 14 great-greatgrandchildren. Survived also by her brother Joe; sisters Ella and Isabel; many nieces & nephews & extended Flaman step children. Mom was born February 8, 1915 in Southey & raised her family in the Markinch area until 1964 when she & Martin retired to Regina. In 1986 she moved to Wapella with her new husband. Mom retired back to Regina in 2003. Prayers will be held at Lee Funeral Home in Regina SK, Fri. April 30, at 7:00 P.M. Funeral Mass will be at St. James Parish, Southey, SK at 10:30 A.M., Sat. May 1. Interment will follow in the Southey Catholic Cemetery.
FRIES - Edward (1931 - 2013). Ed began his journey in Markinch, Sask., zigzagged across the west for 80 years and finally returned to God in Meteghan, NS, passing peacefully, surrounded by love, at the Villa Acadienne, between the sea and the Evangeline Trail. He cooked liked an angel, loved the idea of family, but drove too fast and missed a lot along the way. We remember you smiling dad. FRITZ - Margaret Genevieve (nee Thurmeier) formerly of Lipton, SK, late Regina, SK passed away peacefully on June 20, 2009 at the Regina General Hospital. She was born at Markinch, SK on May 7, 1918. Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband Albert, her parents Ferdinand and Amelia Thurmeier, father-in-law and mother-in-law Jacob and Elizabeth Fritz, brothers Martin, John and Leo and sisters Minne (John) Gress, Molly (Frank) Mrazek and Grace (Oliver) Venne. Margaret is survived by her loving family, daughter Suzette (Garry) Barkwell, their children Lauren (Perry) Rozon, Tracy (Pat) Carrigan and their children Jaiden and Stephen; son Douglas (Dianne), his children Michael (Michelle) Fritz, their children Sydney, Tatum, Melissa (Dennis) O'Neal, their son Hunter, Stacey (Bobbie) Fritz, their children Lake and Kobyn; Dianne's children Rhonda (Lawson) Ring, their children Brittany and Brookelynn, Matthew (Kimberlee) Wittke, children Payton, Emilee and MacKenzee. Also left to mourn are sisters-in-law Jennie Thurmeier, Elsie Thurmeier, Doris Thurmeier, Leona (Ernie) Fry, Edna (Rudy) Ermel, Irene Kemp, Lorraine (Georg) Franke, Linda Fritz, brother-in-law, Ken (Wilma) Fritz as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Margaret enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, watching baseball and hockey. She cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all. We would like to express our sincere appreciation for the care afforded to our Mother at the Regina General Hospital during her extended hospital stay. Special thanks to Dr. Paul for his compassion and kindness to us all. GEBHARDT - Rudolf, passed away Friday, December 28, 2007 at the Shalom Nursing Home, Cupar, SK at the age of 91 yrs. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth of 53 years; his parents; John and Anna Marie, brothers; Henry, Adolf, Wilhelm and Philip, and sisters; Caroline, Valentine, Eleanor, Philipina, Elisa, Wilhelmina and Emma. Rudy is survived by his children; Gordon (Vera), their children Sandra and Pam; Paul (Lee), their children Dawn and Kim; Brian (Linda), their children Corey, Jennifer and Megan; Gail (Dave Galenzoski), their child Sarah; Sister Mary Schneider, sister-in-law Eva Ulrich, six greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Rudy and Liz farmed south of Markinch where they raised their four children. Rudy very much enjoyed his children and grandchildren and visiting with friends and relatives. Rudy was active in the community driving school bus, being a 4-H leader, telephone linesman, local vet, church council member, and pound keeper. He also enjoyed activities such as pool, curling, ball, playing cards, traveling and watching local sports. Rudy and Liz retired to Cupar in 1984 where Rudy was very active in the Plus 50 Club. The family would like to give special thanks to all of those who were involved in Rudy's life and to the staff of the Shalom Nursing Home who cared for him in the last few years. Interment will take place at Wheatwyn Cemetery January 7, 2008 at 1:30 P.M and will be followed by a funeral service at St. Marks Lutheran Church, Markinch, SK.
GEE - Dr. Bill R. At home, in his own space, with family, friends and pets, Bill closed his eyes for the last time on Monday, September 30, 2002, bringing an end to the greatest challenge of his life. Born on August 29, 1944 Bill spent his early years in Markinch, SK. Three years at Luther College, Regina prepared him for his goal of entrance in the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), Guelph, ON. In May 1968 Bill graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and in June, he married Lynn McKerr of Milton, ON and the two headed to Saskatoon so that Bill could begin an internship at the newly opened Western College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1972, Bill received a Master of Science degree from the University of Saskatchewan and the distinction of being the first veterinarian on campus to undertake a postgraduate project at the U of S medical school. In 1977, Bill attained diplomat status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and until 1979 held a faculty position at W.C.V.M. The independence of private practice was tempting and in September 1979 Bill opened Acadia Veterinary Clinic in Saskatoon. "The clinic" was a source of joy and professional satisfaction for 23 years. Family life revolved around Lynn and two sons. Loren, 31, lives in Calgary with his partner, Dr. Nicole Fahlman. Brennen, 28, resides in Kindersley with his partner Melissa Thompson. Bill's pride in his boys was obvious; his relationship with "the girls" was truly beautiful. Bill's only brother, Vernon (Kathy) lives in Edmonton; his mother, Elsa Gee, and his mother-in-law, Elinor McKerr, are in Saskatoon; and his sister-in-law, Joy McKerr, resides in Mexico. Bailey, Molly and Zoe made Bill's family complete and they, too, share his loss. Bill has surely reunited with the two men he most admired, his father, Russell, deceased in 2000, and his father-in-law, Bruce McKerr, deceased in 1988. The past eight months have been marked by the overwhelming support of friends, colleagues, neighbours, relatives and clients. The days were brighter because of you. The staff of Acadia Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Anne, Shelley, Darla, Stacey and Joan, deserve our sincere appreciation. Heartfelt thanks are extended to Dr. Bill Haver and staff, Lakeside Medical Clinic, the staff of St. Paul's Palliative Care Unit, Addie Loomes, Saskatoon District Health, Palliative Home Care and the pharmacists of College Park Family Drugs for facilitating Bill's care at home; special gratitude to Dr. Brian Gibbs, Dr. Henry Kucharski, Dr. Reuben and Jan Mapletoft and Elaine Presnell for their devotion to the family. GEE - Elsa Bertha. On Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at the age of 89, Elsa Bertha Gee passed away suddenly in her home at Luther Riverside Terrace, Saskatoon. Elsa enjoyed a full life and was looking forward to spring at the time of her passing. She grew up in the Wheatwyn community and spent many years raising her family and working alongside Russell in Markinch. In 1972 Elsa and Russell moved to Regina and enjoyed a long and happy retirement there and at their cottage in Katepwa. She was active in church and community affairs and took pleasure in her family and many friends, particularly when she put on dinners, which usually required extensions to the dinner table. Elsa was predeceased by her husband Russell in 2000, her son Billy in 2002, and her sisters and brothers: Edith, Emma, Bill and Paul. She is survived by her son Vernon and his wife Kathy of Edmonton, her daughter-in-law Lynn of Saskatoon, grandsons and their partners; Loren and Nicole of Calgary, Brennen and Melissa of Saskatoon, Ryan and Lina of Edmonton, and Reagan and Leanne of Edmonton, two very special nieces Beryl Ledingham, Regina, and Joyce Fitz, Victoria, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service for Elsa will be held at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3510 Queen Street, Regina, on Monday May 5th at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Pastor Craig Moeller. HAATVEDT - Evelene (nee Staruiala). Our dear mother, grandmother and wife passed away on Monday, October 27, 2008, to a peaceful place of rest with close family by her side. Evelene was born on November 6, 1922 in Markinch, Sask. She was predeceased by her parents George and Fracina Staruiala; brothers George, Nick and Danny; sisters Vicki Algera, Helen George, Anne Bogdan, Mary Duduman, Violet Pauly and Connie Sweeney. Evelene is survivied by her beloved husband Hilmer, daughter Sonya, son Randy, granddaughters Samantha (great-grandchildren Aiden and Isabella) and Sarah; sisters Florence Neimor, Irene Ganne, Kathleen Kyle, Frances Borrebach and many neices and nephews. Evelene lived in Regina for many years and was the owner of the Glo Uniform Co. She lived in Jamaica and Greece and traveled extensively throughout the world gaining numerous friends in her travels. In keeping with Evelene's wishes, a private service will be held. She will be greatly missed and be in our hearts forever. Winnifred (nee Trimbell), late of Regina formerly of Markinch, SK passed away peacefully on Monday, October 07, 2002, at the age of 89 years, at the Regina Lutheran Home, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer disease. Winnifred is predeceased by her parents, Fred and Emma Timbrell, sister Gert (Phil) Harding and brother-in-law Carol Hirschliber all of London, ON. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years George, sister, Edna Hirschliber, sister-in-law Louise Ulmer as well as numerous nieces and nephews. HODEL - George passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the age of 81 years. He was predeceased by his parents Rudolph and Millie; and brother Ron. George will be lovingly remembered by his wife Dianne; two sons, Marlon and his daughters Jaden, Kaelyn and Charly; Terry (Tracy) and their son Parker; sisters Erna Holdal, Ann Meyer, Hilda (Walter) King, Martha (Harry) King, Doris Finishen, Alvina (Gerry) Braumberger and Harold (Olga) and their families. HOWICK - William Johnson. Funeral of former Howick and Carrick resident, William Johnson was held at the home of his sister at Gorrie on Monday afternoon, November 27th. Burial at McIntosh Cemetery. Pallbearers: Walter Renwick, John Renwick, L. Harkness, T. Douglas, W. Haskins, & Wallace Pumroy. For the past 40 years, Mr. Johnson was a resident of Markinch, Sask, and died in Regina after a short illness. He was a Pres and attend MacIntosh School. A brother, Howard of Carrot River, Sask, and one sister, Miss Sarah Johnson of Gorrie, survive him.
HUBER - Arnold of Regina, formerly of Markinch and Southey, died peacefully August 13, 2004. Arnold was born May 28, 1914. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Marie; brothers Conrad (Mary), John, Karl, Ernest; sister Alma (Victor) Ruecker; brother-in-law Carl Manz; daughter-in-law Christina. Arnold is survived by his loving wife Susanna of 62 years; his children Lenore, Ardin and Larry (Margo); grandchildren Dixie (Mike) Hintz, Nolan (Jessica Wagner) Huber, Erin Huber, Robin (Curtis) Dubiel, and Amy (Shawn) McCuaig; great-grandchildren Varrick and Neesa Hintz, Markus Huber and Cassidy Wagner, Kyle Huber and Talia Shergold Huber, and Clayton Dubiel. He is also survived by his sisters Marie Manz and Elenor Powers; brother Raymond (Betty) Kainz; in-laws Molly Huber and Ruth Kainz as well as numerous nieces and nephews. At Arnold's request a Graveside Service will be held in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. Cremation.
IRWIN - Loreen Caroline Christine (nee Hehn) died on May 27, 2015 after a three month battle with cancer. A professional nurse, working for more than 35 years in Regina, Cupar, Wetaskiwin, and Saskatoon, Loreen had a passion for geriatrics and rehabilitative medicine and spent much of her life taking care of others. She will be dearly missed by her three children, her four grandchildren, her sisters and brother, her fantastic nieces and nephews, and all of their families. Before she died, Loreen expressed a wish not to have a public funeral.
JASPER - LaVerne A. (nee Cole) October 16, 1926 - January 19, 2011. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of LaVerne. LaVerne, better known by all as Nana, was originally from Markinch and resided in Regina. Nana passed away peacefully and gracefully with her devoted daughter Brenda at her side. She is predeceased by her parents Charles and Ida Cole; her parents-in-law Patrick and Margret Jasper; her beloved husband Gerald; and daughter-in-law Sharon. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters; Brenda (Norm) and Joanne; son Ken (Alice), 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and brother Vic (Peggy) Cole. KAINZ - Anna Maria (nee Silzer) passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2015 at the age of 96. Anna was born and raised on a farm north of Markinch, SK. She resided on farms north of Markinch and Zehner. She then retired to Regina in 1975. Anna was predeceased by her husband Albert (1992), they spent 52 glorious years together; parents, Frank and Eva Silzer; brothers Frank, Karl, Ernest and Otto; and sisters Minnie Hubick, Emma Howell, Edith Kainz, Olga Silzer and Emily Hassman. Anna is survived by her daughters Marlene Sentes, Joan (Rod) Moore, Sandra (Peter) Meadowcroft, Karen (Marty) Walters and son Wayne (Galina) Kainz; grandchildren Debra (Frank) Benesh, Doug (Sheri) Sentes, Shelly Kainz, Sheldon (Tammy) Kainz, Richard (Lori) Moore, Darren Moore, Curtis Moore, Sonya (Greg) Cole, Cheri (Tim) Hameluck, Laura (Luke) Forbes, Clayton Walters, Trisha (Doug) DeMars; 27 great-grandchildren and 5 great- great-grandchildren; sisters Teresa Yearly and Eva Geber; and Shelly and Sheldon's mother Lorraine Kainz. KAINZ - Edith. On Friday, March 14, 2003, Edith Kainz, late of Regina, passed away in her 88th year. She was born on June 5, 1915 in Markinch, SK. Edith was predeceased by her husband Emil, her son Gerald; her sisters: Minnie, Emma, Olga and Emile; and brothers: Frank, Charlie and Ernest. Edith is survived by her sons: Bert (Emilie) and Kenneth (Lorraine); grandchildren: Darren, Kelly, Chris, Tara and Kendra; five great-grandchildren; brother Otto Silzer; and sisters: Ann Kainz, Theresa Yearley and Eva Geber. KEVOL - Caroline Alma (nee Fiege), July 18, 1921 - February 26, 2008 of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Carol was born in Markinch District, SK on July 18, 1921. Carol attended school in Markinch followed by Normal School Training in Regina, later receiving her teaching degree. She met Bill Kevol in 1943 and they married in 1946. Mom taught elementary school in one room schools in Saskatchewan, in Victoria where they lived for seventeen years, and in Calgary where they moved in 1964. Mom and Dad enjoyed square dancing and bowling for many years. Her grandchildren were a great source of joy for her. Mom loved spending time with her grandchildren and attending as many softball and hockey games as possible to cheer them on. She also loved watching all the Flames and Stampeders games on television. Carol is survived by her husband Bill; daughter Karen; son Garry and his wife Sherron; her grandchildren Christopher, Michael, Billy, Brian and Beth; and her sister Elsie. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Clara, Irma and Leona. She was predeceased by her parents Gottfried and Augustina Fiege; her brothers Kasper, Carl, Erhardt and an infant brother in Russia; her sisters and their husbands, Lydia (Walter) Huffnagel and Eleanor (Marv) Ahl and brother-in-law Johnny Thurmeier. Carol is also predeceased by her beloved daughter Marilyn, and her son-in-law Bob Won. A Celebration of her Life will be held at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd (13811 Deer Ridge Drive S.E.) Monday, March 3, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.
KIRSCH - Elsie Olga passed away peacefully at her home in Regina on December 8, 2010. Born in Markinch, Sask. This year Elsie moved from Dysart to Regina, where she had resided for over 30 years. Elsie was predeceased by her husband John in 1997 as well as other family members. She is survived by her daughter Lorraine (Marvin) Lezon, grandson, Darren (Kathy Dreher), son Ken (Jan) Huber, granddaughters Nancy (Chris) Rogers, and Diane Huber. She is also survived by her sisters, Evelyn (Ray) Wismer, Edna Reardon, Margaret Huber and their families, as well as the Kirsch families. Elsie was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all who know her, and she will be greatly missed. Elsie was always willing to help you, and always put others first. She loved to crochet and quilt, play cards and bingo as well as cook and bake. You never left her home hungry and her quilts and doilies are in homes all over the prairies. At her request, there will be no funeral, but a private family internment will be held at a later date.
LAURIDSEN - Edward "Ed" late of Regina, passed away at the age of 83 years on Saturday, January 26, 2002. He was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Louise; brothers, Maurius and Albert; sisters, Louise and Hilda; father and mother-in-law, Anna and Frank Hodel; brothers-in-law, Louie, Art, Frank, Bernie, Victor, John and Dave; sister-in-law, Elma. Ed is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frieda (nee Hodel); daughters, Donalda Lauridsen (Ken), Annette (Dave) Folk and Myrna Furo; grandchildren, Kathy (Lee), Myrna-May, Colin and Trina; brother, Norman (Gerty); sisters, Mary (Jake), Doris (Johnny) and Dolly (Steve); brothers-in-law, George and John; sisters-in-law, Minnie, Hilda, Kay, Marie-Ann, Mary-Ann and Emma; and nieces and nephews. Ed was a very honest and hard working man, who like the outdoors such as gardening and the flowers. He survived a major stroke in 1991 and was somewhat limited in his daily life. LENZIN - Anton, passed away on November 2, 2000. Born in Markinch, SK., on March 15, 1915. Predeceased by brothers Helmut and Gus and sisters Alma and Clara. Tony is survived by his wife Grace and her family. MANZ - Ardyth Edna (nee Miller), late of William Albert House, Emerald Park, SK and formerly of Regina, SK and Markinch, SK, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2008 at the age of 88 years. She was predeceased by her father Albert (Bert) Miller; sister Helen; infant son; stepfather Edward Dienst; mother Elsie Dienst; brother Greg Miller and numerous sisters-and brothers-in-law. Ardyth is survived by her loving husband, of 64 years, Fernie; daughters Sandra Manz, of Carrot River, SK and Jeanette (Steve) Page of Lacombe, AB; grandchildren Damian Brazeau of Calgary, AB and Layla Page of Lacombe, AB; and great granddaughter Annika Brazeau of Calgary, AB. She is also survived by her sister Catherine (Jack) Conn of Vancouver, BC; sisters-inlaw Jean Miller of Regina, Adeline Manz of Southey, SK and Alma Hodel of Sacramento, California; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Ardyth was born and grew up at Ceylon, SK. She taught at Round Up School near Ceylon, then King School near Markinch where she met Fernie Manz. They were married October 15, 1943 and spent most of their lives farming and raising their family in the Markinch area. Retirement years were spent with Fernie visiting family, travelling, painting, working on crosswords, needlepoint, knitting, crocheting and doing some amazing baking. Ardyth and Fernie moved to Regina in 1997 and most recently to William Albert House in Emerald Park as a result of declining health. Thanks to the staff at WAH for the kind and loving care they gave to Ardyth (mom). She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. MANZ - Fernie Manz, born July 18, 1916, late of William Albert House, Emerald Park, SK, formerly of Regina, SK and Markinch, SK, passed away on Friday, August 15, 2014 at the age of 98 years. Fernie was predeceased by his father Ludwig Manz; mother Julianna Manz; wife Ardyth Manz; infant son; brother John Manz; sisters Louise Watkin, Olga Pederson and Eleanor Blaser; and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law. He is survived by his daughters Sandra Manz of Carrot River, SK and Jeanette (Steve) Page of Lacombe, AB; grandchildren Layla Page of Lacombe, AB and Damian (Natasha) Brazeau of Oliver, BC; great-grandchildren Annika, Atlin and Akaius Brazeau of Oliver, BC; sister Alma Hodel of Sacramento, California; sister-in-law Adeline Manz of Southey, SK; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and a few remaining friends. Fernie was born and grew up on his parents' homestead farm in the Wheatwyn Dististrict near Markinch, SK. He met Ardyth at a dance when she was teaching at King School in the area, and they married in October 1943. They moved to their own farm five miles west of the homestead in 1945, where they raised their family. Fernie continued to "farm from town" after they moved to Markinch in 1960. He retired at age 65, selling his farm to his nephew, Donald Manz. With new found time, Fernie and Ardyth spent some time travelling on tours and in their van, visiting family more often and seeing new sights across North America. In 1997, he and Ardyth moved to Rainbow Towers in Regina, and in 2007, to William Albert House in Emerald Park, due to Ardyth's failing health. He remained a resident there until his passing. Fernie's main loves in life were his Lutheran faith and church, his family ? immediate and extended, friends, the earth ? farming and gardening, picking berries, woodworking and fixing things, music, singing and dancing. After age 95 and two hip fractures, his health declined more and more but he was accepting of his situation, patient and happy for each new day of life. We thank him for the example he gave for us to follow. Appreciative thanks to the nurses and staff at WAH for Fernie's home there and the kind and loving care they provided him for the past seven years. Special thanks to his closest friends there: Tammy, Dena, Joan and Leone. Fernie was a cherished and much-loved person in many lives. We will miss him dearly but we know he is now walking, dancing, seeing, hearing and singing once more and waiting to welcome us to heaven. MANZ - John F. of Southey and formerly of Markinch passed away November 25, 2007 at the age of 86. Predeceased by a great granddaughter Autumn Manz, sisters Louise and Eleanor. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Adeline of 58 years, 4 sons Gordon (Lori) and their children Kurt (Kendall) and Dean (Amanda); Glenn and his children Andrea and Jordan; Donald (Marcia) and their children Marc and Daric; Reg (Tammy) and their children Makenzie, Tanner and Tyson; daughter Angela (Les) Davis and their children Nicholas, Nelson and Alex; brother Fernie (Ardyth), sisters Olga and Alma, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. MARCHTALER - Anne Irene (nee Weisbrod), passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on January 18, 2001. Predeceased by Erwin, her husband of fifty years on April 3, 1984; infant son, Wayne; daughter-in-law Norma; granddaughter Louanne Marchtaler; son-in-law Ron Golling; three brothers: Frank, Emil, Ed. She leaves to mourn her passing her only sister Ida Stockman; six sons: Erv (Adeline), Herb, Ed (Judy), Eugene (Joan), Kurt (Marge), Ken (Linda); four daughters: Charlotte Golling, Sylvia (Wayne) Massier, Vivian, Wanda and her partner Randall Strautman; thirty-one grandchildren; thirty eight great grandchildren; sister-in-law Agnes Weisbrod; three nephews: Emil, Richard, Earl Weisbrod; one niece Iris Miller. Anne was born August 14, 1913 at Markinch, Sask. Anne's younger years were spent working on various farms around the Regina area. Anne met Erwin when he was hired to help with harvest at her parents' farm. They fell in love and were married six months later in Regina. Anne spent her life devoted to taking care of her husband and family. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Anne also loved animals and for the last ten years her cat Pepsi was her constant companion. She also enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing and knitting. A visit to her home always included a cup of tea with assorted goodies. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will always cherish tea time with their Gramma. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the CCU at the Regina General Hospital and Pastor D. Fingas for their compassion during this stressful time. MASSIER - Wilhelmine "Minnie" Rose (nee Hodel) December 8, 1914 - July 10, 2007. At the age of 92, she closed her eyes for the last time and went to meet her Lord. Mom was predeceased by our Dad, her beloved husband, John; her parents, Frank and Anna Hodel; infant sister, Emma; and brothers: Bernie, Frank, Louie and Art. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Al Pellrene of Edmonton; her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Bev Massier; her grandchildren, Todd Massier; Tim and Kathy Massier and great granddaughters, Grace and Zoe; and Sherilee Massier, all of Des Moines, Iowa. Mom is also survived by her sisters, Frieda Lauridsen and Hilda Gaschler; brother and sister-in-law, John Hodel and Mary Ann Santha; sisters-in-law, Emma Hodel, Kay Hodel, Marie-Anne Hodel and Olga Massier; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carrie Matthews and Clay Dorsey; as well as nieces and nephews. Mom was born at Balgonie; the family moved to the Markinch district when she was still a child. She attended Wiley School, completing Grade 8, while helping her parents with farm work. On October 6, 1936, she and Dad were married. They lived in the Serath and Balgonie areas before buying their farm in the Gregherd district north of Markinch in 1946 where they lived until they moved to Regina in 1969. After retirement, they enjoyed lots of little trips to and with friends and family, things they hadn't been able to do in their younger days when there were pennies to be counted, cows to be milked and a farm to be taken care of. Mom's world changed when Dad died in 1998. She remained strong for several years family and friends helped her so much and allowed her the illusion of independence while living in her own home. Eventually, however, physical and mental deterioration left no choice but for her to enter Santa Maria Seniors Home in 2005. Mom's perfect day might have been a summer day when she could wake up before sunrise to hoe her garden (stepping very, very carefully to avoid any wayward earthworms on the sidewalk). It would have been a day spent with Dad, the one and only love of her life, and a day that saw visits or a phone call from her children and grandchildren. She would have cleaned something anything! and she would have made bread and a batch of cinnamon rolls. On a summer evening, she might have looked forward to a visit with someone in the shade of the back yard, offering coffee from that ever-present coffee pot. And if it was winter, you can be sure that through the magic of yarn and crochet hooks, yet another afghan would have been materializing from that easy chair beside the phone before someone came in for a noisy game of Rook. Our thanks to the wonderful staff on the second floor of Santa Maria. Especially in the last two weeks, we watched as you cared for Mom with respect and compassion. You touched us with your obvious affection for her and made us laugh at your stories of her sense of humor. MATYJANKA - Agnes Ida 1919 - 2004. The death of Agnes Matyjanka occurred at Redwater Community Health Center, Redwater Alberta, on Monday October 18th, 2004 at the age of 85 years. Agnes is lovingly remembered by her 2 sons Gerald (Elaine) of Bethune SK, and Clarence (Sally) of Redwater AB; also by 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Agnes was predeceased by her daughter Marlene, her parents, brothers and sisters. MCAULAY - Kenneth Edmund of Cupar, SK, passed away peacefully at the Cupar Nursing Home on Friday, August 31, 2007 at the age of 89 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years Margaret; parents, Ralph and Florence McAulay; his brother Gordon; and sisters Lois and Jean. He is survived by his three nieces, Joan Pirsak of Fort Qu'Appelle, Barbara Amell of Portland, Oregon and Leslie Wlatz of Vancouver, Washington; his nephew Glen Webber of Regina; Margaret's nephew Ken (George) Peters and her grandchildren who really enjoyed their time at the farm, Paula, Pamela, Susan, Jennifer and her five greatgrandchildren. Ken was born June 20, 1918 on the farm at Markinch. He grew up and went to school in Markinch and made farming his career. In 1962 he married Margaret Myers and they lived on the farm for 18 years. In 1987 they moved to Cupar and in 2005 the Shalom Nursing Home became their home, which they really enjoyed. Ken did income tax returns for people in the community and he had a long list of customers that kept coming back every year. He enjoyed playing cards and visiting with his men friends over coffee in the local cafe. A special thanks to Ken Peters, who was there to look after him until he passed away. Cremation. Interment will be at a later date in Markinch Cemetery.
MCAULAY - Margaret (nee Tait) Myers McAulay of Cupar, SK, passed away peacefully at the Pasqua Hospital on March 31, 2006 at the age of 88 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Susan Tait; first husband, Bob Myers; her brothers Andrew and George; sister Helen. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Ken; her children, Roberta (Woodie) Beug of Calgary, Alberta; Jack (Karen) Myers of Delta, BC; her grandchildren, Paula, Pamela Susan and Jennifer; her great-grandchildren Blake, Mackenzie, James and Josh; her brother, Calvin (Doris) Tait of Thunder Bay, Ontario; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Margaret was born May 4, 1917 in Regina, raised in Fort Qu'Appelle and came to Cupar in 1936 to work for Alice and Frank Turner. In 1938 she married Bob Myers, they lived in Cupar and had two children. She started working at the Cupar Hospital in 1954 and stayed there for 13 years. During that time she was a nurse's aide but also the x-ray and lab technician. In 1962 she married Ken McAulay and in 1969 they moved to the farm at Markinch. In 1987 they moved back to Cupar where they lived until they moved in 2003 to a Care Home in Regina. In June 2005 they moved to the Shalom Nursing Home in Cupar. A special thanks to her nephew Ken Peters who was there to look after her until she passed away. All who knew her will sadly miss Margaret. "A little lady that everyone liked." No service will be held at Margaret's request. Cremation. Interment will be at a later date in Markinch Cemetery.
MCGILLIVRAY - Amelia "Emma" (nee Maier) of Regina, formerly of Pense, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at the age of 82. Predeceased by her husband Hugh, two sisters and a brother. Left to cherish Emma's memory is her sister, Edie Maier (Trixie); her daughter, Susan (Taffy); son, Richard and his wife Patty; granddaughter; Laura-Lee; and greatgranddaughter, Melinda; one sister-in-law, Kathleen Meyers (nee McGillivray); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Emma was born in Markinch, SK and lived in many small Saskatchewan communities until she moved to Regina where she met Hugh. They married on June 3, 1949. Emma was a true farmer, working along side Hugh. She was also a superb cook, seamstress and gardener. Emma was active in her community, especially in the U.C.W. She was generous in every way and her home was always open. Although Emma never had the opportunity to physically travel, she traveled the world in books and television documentaries. Her love of reading extended to a wide variety of topics, including romance novels, science, technology and always the National Geographic. Emma loved people and enjoyed conversations with everyone she met. She was a breast cancer survivor, and a true animal lover. She was also a dedicated Blue Jay fan and followed their games closely. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at the Regina Funeral Home, Hwy #1 East, on Friday, May 14, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. with Mary Beth Nicks Barbour officiating.
NARGANG - John passed away March 15, 2008. John was born July 8, 1921 in Markinch, SK to Louis and Emilia Nargang. John was the youngest of five children. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings and his granddaughter, Cherissa. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helen; his sons, Darryl, Duane and Dale (Denise) and his grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew and Elizabeth. John joined the army after high school graduation. Upon his discharge he took teacher training, beginning a 40 year career in education. John taught at various locations in the province. He spent his last 20 years teaching in Aberdeen. He retired in 1982. He was active in his profession in negotiations at the local level and represented teachers at the STF provincial council in 1975 and 1976. John was actively involved in hockey. He refereed in his younger years. Upon moving to Saskatoon John was actively involved with the Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association for many years as a zone commissioner, Treasurer, Registrar and President from 1972 1974. He was a life member of the Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association and President from 1984 1985. Horse racing season found him at the Pari-Mutuels where he worked for over 20 years, eventually working as a Supervisor. Several winters were spent at the Exhibition Curling Rink where he was in charge of the curling draws. Upon recovering from bypass surgery he became a founding member of the Coronary Artery Rehabilitation Group in 1985. In addition to being a founding member, he acted as Treasurer and Registrar for many years. Donations in memory of John may be made to C.A.R.G., 2020 College Drive, S7N 2W4. NEHER - John Gustav late of Regina, passed away November 25, 2000, at the age of 81. John was predeceased by his parents John and Emma; his brothers Ernest, George and Oswald; his sisters Elizbeth Brenner and Ann Johnson. He is survived by his sister Erna (Walt) Alex; and his brothers Alvin and Bill. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Alice; his sons Allister and William (Sheryl); and his beloved grandsons Jonathon and Jamieson. John joined the army in 1942, and was wounded at Caen, France. He spent two years at Veterans' Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg, where he learned the trade of shoe repair. On his return to Saskatchewan, he opened the Veterans' Shoe Repair Shop in Markinch, which became the hub of social life in the town. In 1951, he married Alice Kozan and moved to Winnipeg, where he worked as a service control operator for Carter Motors. In 1954, he moved to Yorkton and worked as a bookkeeper for Kozan Furniture. In 1971, he and the family moved to Regina, where he continued to work for Kozan Furniture. John was a member of the War Amputations of Canada, and served as the president and treasurer of the local branch for many years; the organization was an important aspect of his life, as was the Lutheran Church, to which he had a strong commitment, and served in many capacities. John had a ready wit was always ready to lend a helping hand in any situation. He will be missed by all who knew him. A SERVICE TO CELEBRATE John's life will be at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 190 Massey Road, Regina, SK, on Wednesday, November 29, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Sid Haugen officiating. OLTEAN - Dean Constantine, beloved husband of Eleanor of Calgary, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2006 at the age of 87 years. Dean was born on December 24, 1918, on the farm in Markinch, SK district. For many years later he farmed in the Pense, SK district. Upon his retirement, Dean came to Calgary in 1984 where he developed a passion for woodworking and would spend countless hours working at his lathe in his shop. He thrived on accomplishment, always enjoyed travelling and loved entertaining his family and friends. Along with his wife Eleanor, Dean was a long time member of the Icelandic Club in both Regina, SK and Calgary. Besides his loving wife Eleanor, of fifty-eight years, Dean is also survived by his two brothers, George of Windsor, ON and William of Vancouver, BC; his sister Flora Oltean of Nova Scotia; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Susanna and Ion Oltean; as well as by four sisters and five brothers. OPRE - George. On Thursday, June 24, 2010 the gates of heaven opened wide and welcomed home our beloved husband and father, George Opre. George was born in Cupar on January 4, 1934 and grew up on the family farm in Markinch. He later came to Regina where he met the love of his life, Shirley; they married and raised their three dear children, Arden, David, & Timothy. George was lucky enough to find the job he loved where he was employed for 26 years with Custom Truck Sales, ending his career as Branch Manager. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always put others first in spite of the pain he suffered throughout his life. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 47 years, Shirley Sam; his three children, Arden Geiger, David (Marina) and Timothy (Beverley); grandchildren, Adam, Matthew, Andrew, Kiana, and Kaden; brother, John (Anne); sisters, Anne and Margaret. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 28, 2010 at Good Samaritan R.C. OSWALD - Helene Ruth (nee Ulrich) passed away on August 10, 2002 at the age of 63 after a courageous battle with cancer at her home in Beltsville, Maryland. Predeceased by her father William Ulrich, infant brother Edwin, brother Harold and brother-in-law Rick Fuhro. Helene leaves to mourn her mother, Ella Ulrich, three sisters: Loretta Fuhro, Sylvia (Harvey) Halbert and Carol (Philip) Ermel and sister-in-law Carol Ulrich along with some remaining aunts, uncles and numerous nieces and nephews. Helene grew up at Markinch, SK and attended the U of S at Saskatoon. She moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1967, where she spent many years running a telephone crisis centre. Since 1991 her time in Maryland was spent as an Organizational and Management Consultant. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, August 24th at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and was attended by numerous friends and colleagues from both states and the surrounding area.
PETERSON - Olga Catherine (nee Manz) Schneider Peterson, late of William Albert House Personal Care Home, Emerald Park, SK passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 8, 2007 at the age of 93 years. She was predeceased by her first husband John Schneider; second husband Glen Peterson; sisters Louise (Frank) Watkin and Eleanor (Norman) Blaser; brother Johnny Manz; brothersand sisters-in-law Ed Hodel, Gus, Leo, Eric, Fred Schneider, Alma (Fernie) Manz, Frieda (Carl) Wolfe and Olga Gruber. Olga is survived by her children Ronald (Rowena) Schneider, Saskatoon, SK and Kathryn (Charles) Kirsch, Regina, SK; grandchildren Ryan, Rory and Regan Schneider, Kimberley (Doug) Elworthy, Johnathon Kirsch and Kara (Brett) Statham; great grandchildren Roanne Schneider and Tyler and Ella Statham; brother Ferdinand (Ardyth) Manz; sister Alma Hodel; also surviving Olga are her brothersand sisters-in-law Adeline Manz, Louie and Larry Schneider, Herb and Sylvia Schneider, Velma Schneider, Erica Schneider, Alvin and Helen Neher and Fred Gruber; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. POSEHN - Eleanor (nee Silzer) September 3, 1933 - September 4, 2006. Eleanor passed away peacefully at the William Booth Grace Hospice with her family at her side. She was predeceased by her husband Albert; parents Rudy and Elizabeth Silzer; brother Dennis Silzer; fatherand mother-in-law Henry and Molly Posehn and brother-in-law Wilfred Posehn. Eleanor is lovingly remembered by her children Lyle (Debra) Posehn, Randy (Gayle) Posehn and Shelley (Ron) Chibi; grandchildren Kevin (Karma) and Kyle Posehn, Christopher and Jennifer Posehn, and Andrew, Matthew and Rebecca Chibi; brothers-in-law Ernie (Gertie) Posehn and Arnold (Caroline) Posehn; sister-in-law Marina Silzer as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Eleanor was born in Markinch, SK. After moving to Regina, she worked for T. Eaton Co. and married Albert in 1951. Eleanor was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend and homemaker. She was dedicated to her immediate and "extended" family, babysitting for many children to whom she became known as "Aunty". Later, Eleanor babysat her grandchildren to whom she was totally devoted. She faithfully followed their extra curricular activities becoming their biggest supporter and fan. POWELL - Doris Grace, late of Cupar, SK, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at the age of 78 years. She was predeceased by her parents, George & Jeannie Powell and sister Mary Colbert. Doris is survived by her brother Charles, four nieces and nephews and close friend Mrs. Hibbert. Doris was born on her Uncle's farm near Markinch, SK on November 19, 1925. She attended The Little Touchwood School. Doris enjoyed living on the farm north of Cupar where she resided until she bought a home in Cupar. Doris and her brother Charlie enjoyed farming together for many years. Once they moved to town they rented out the farm. Doris enjoyed sewing, making quilts and gardening. Doris moved into Shalom on July 6, 2000. The Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at 1:30 P.M. in the Chapel of Cupar and District Nursing Home, Cupar, SK with Pastor Danna Armstrong officiating. ROSTAD - Raymond Paul "Grizzly". On Friday, March 30, 2001, Ray Rostad, late of Markinch passed away peacefully at the age of 60 with his family by his side. Predeceased by his parents, William and Cecilia. Ray leaves to mourn his loving wife Brenda; children Cheryl (Ron), Paul (Susan), Steven (Angela), Natalie (Tracy), Jeffery, Kurtis, numerous grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and several stepchildren. SANDERco*ck - Elmer Charles "Sandy" of Southey, SK, died accidentally on Thursday, August 7, 2003. He was born April 16, 1923 and was raised in the Markinch district on the family homestead. Sandy taught school for three years, then returned to farming in the late 1940's. In 1951, he married Esther McKenzie of Aylesbury, SK, and together they raised four children and continued to farm until retiring to Southey. Elmer was an active community member, serving on the Markinch school board, the local Wheat Pool, Co-op Association and Credit Union boards, the Right Angle Hockey League in several capacities, and the United Church board for Cupar and, later the Southey congregations. His fondest affiliations were with the Masonic Lodge, Wa Wa Shrine and associated lodges. Family and friends were all aware of his proud membership in the Wa Wa Shrine T-Bird Patrol and the many parades in which he and fellow shriners participated. The successes and accomplishments of his children were a source of ongoing pride for Elmer. He is also survived by three sisters, Elda (Wilton) O'Brien of Kelowna, BC, Vera (Lex) Potter of Regina, SK, Verna Post of Hilo, HI, by one brother Hugh (Eleanor) Sanderco*ck of Lanigan, SK, and by several nieces and nephews. SCHMIDT - Rose (nee Hugel) April 19, 1915 - December 9, 2011. With sadness and love the family of Rose Schmidt announces her passing at Stensrud Lodge in Saskatoon at the age of 96 years. She was predeceased by her husband John (1994); her parents Jacob and Magdelena Hugel; a sister in infancy; brothers Jake and Leo; and sister Suzanna. Rose is survived by her son Don (Ellie); daughter Marilyn (Ken) Lorenz; four grandsons Tony (Liz) Schmidt, Derek (Kelly) Schmidt, Shawn (Carrie) Lorenz and Devin (Jodi) Lorenz; eleven great grandchildren Catherine Rose, Marcus, Jonathan and Sarah Schmidt, Austin and Lincoln Schmidt, Emma, Abby and Noah Lorenz, Taylor and Aaron Lorenz. She is also survived by brother John (Elsie) Hugel; sister-in-law Margaret Hugel; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Mom was born in Regina and grew up on the family farm north of Markinch, SK. On November 22, 1941 Mom and Dad were married in Southey and farmed in the Hazelwood District until moving to Regina in 1956. After Dad passed away, Mom moved to an apartment in Regina. In 2006 she moved to St. Volodymyr Villa in Saskatoon and finally to Stensrud Lodge in October 2009. Mom's greatest love was spending time with family and friends. She was always ready to welcome visitors to her home. Mom enjoyed gardening, but her passion was her flowers and their yard on Empress Street was proof of that each summer. She had many interest and hobbies including crocheting, knitting, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, bingo, going to the casino, listening to old time music, watching movies, and playing cards especially a good game of Rook. Mom loved to travel, visiting nine provinces and one territory in Canada, several trips to various destinations in the United States, as well as visits to Hawaii, Mexico, Hong Kong, Australia and England. SCHNEIDER - Fred Schneider, aged 89, passed away peacefully at the Cupar Nursing Home on October 11, 2007. Fred was predeceased by his parents Leopold and Marie Schneider; infant son Wayne; and grandson Matthew; brothers John, Leo, Gus and Eric; sisters Alma, Olga and Frieda; brothers-in-law Fernie Manz and Carl Wolfe. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Erika a couple as much in love on their sixtieth anniversary as their first. Fred is also survived by daughter Donna (Eric Hnatiuk); sons Roy (Gail) and Mark (Louise); grandsons Michael Hnatiuk, Kevin Hnatiuk (Alexandra), Jeff Schneider, and Trevor Schneider; granddaughter Jennifer Corbin-Sanderson; great-grandsons Harrison and George Hnatiuk; greatgranddaughter Madeline Hnatiuk; brothers Louie (Lorraine) and Herb (Sylvia); sister Helen (Alvin Nehr); sisters-in-law Olga Peterson and Welma Schneider; brother-inlaw Fred Gruber; and many nieces and nephews. Fred served his country in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1942-46 before returning home to farm in the community of Markinch for many years. He and Erika later moved to Southey although Fred took an active part in the farm's operation well past his eightieth year, until his body would no longer allow him to do so. His interest never waned. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as a trusted friend and neighbour. Fred had an undying love of nature and a passion for the land. He epitomized reliability, honesty, perseverance and determination a valued member of the community and a much-loved member of his family. He will be missed by all, but leaves a storehouse of memories to help ease his passing. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, October 15, 2007, 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Markinch, Saskatchewan. Interment will follow at Wheatwyn Cemetery.

Predeceased by the love of her life, husband Ludwig (Louie); her parents Ludwig and Amalia, brothers John, Henry, Bill, Jack, Frank, Albert and Carl; sisters, Grace, Millie, Freda and Anne. SCHNEIDER - Maria "Mary" (nee Gebhardt). After 96 years of strength and resiliency, we are saying good-bye to our mom, Mary Schneider. She passed away quietly on Thursday, July 22 in Saskatoon. Born in 1919, Maria Gebhardt was the thirteenth child of John and Maria Gebhardt who homesteaded south of Markinch, SK. She married Eddy Schneider during the war years and they went on to raise five children. Their working lives were spent in Regina and Saskatoon and their home was open to several family members who were studying and starting their careers. Throughout her 96 years, our mother had many accomplishments and always strove to make a better life for her family. To her, higher education was a calling. She proudly achieved her GED and cooking diplomas after raising her family. She ran a few small businesses, managed many kitchens, taught senior nutrition, sold insurance and even made Saskatoon berry tarts for the Queen. Mom's mind was active and alert almost to the end, taking an interest in current affairs, tennis, curling, and the Blue Jays which she followed with a passion. Even in her last few years, you would often see her next to an overflowing bag of library books she had just finished. She was a strong role model for all and often outspoken on issues which she felt deeply about. She would often push her children and grandchildren to be their best, from "encouraging" them to take on tasks like making homemade apple strudel to starting families. Predeceased by her beloved husband and an infant son, Mary had sons Keith (Marlene) and Ken (Sharon) in Regina, and Floyd (Raema Jean) in Agassi, BC, and daughters Dori and Brenda (Dwayne) in Saskatoon. She was also proud of her eleven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and all her family who lovingly called her Aunt Mary. Her abiding faith carried her through many of life's adversities and was a comfort and support to her to the end. Although it is with great sadness we say good-bye, we know she has been waiting many years to be reunited with her Eddy again. The family would like very much to extend our heartfelt thanks and deep gratitude to Pastor David Hunter, the Augustana Women's Group, and the staff of the Preston Extendicare who unfailingly attended to Mom's needs and came with compassion and empathy to every task. SEPOS - Agnes (January 3, 1918 - December 13, 2007) passed away peacefully at Extendicare Sunset surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her parents and husband, Andrew, seven brothers and two sisters. Agnes will be sadly missed by her four children, Gerald (Edna), Elza (Bob), Violet (Horst) and Larry (Sharon); 16 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two sisters, Louise and Rose and three sisters in law, Annie Bereti, Julia Colburn and Betty Alexander. She was born in Gregherd District, SK and raised in Arbury District, SK. Agnes spent the war years in Ontario, returned to Saskatchewan and farmed at Markinch. She moved to Regina, where she spent many years as a cook. Agnes made many friends at the Royal Canadian Legion and the Army, Navy and Air Force Vets. At Agnes' request, there will be no funeral service. A Private Family Memorial will be held at a later date. SILZER - Leonard passed away December 16, 2015 at 77 years of age. He was born March 27, 1938, the eldest child of Arnold and Sabina (Fries) Silzer. Leonard grew up near Markinch, SK on the family farm. He married Marjorie in 1971 and spent time in Regina and Calgary working at several jobs before settling into the insurance industry. Leonard and Marjorie settled in Moose Jaw after his retirement. Leonard was predeceased by his parents; wife Marjorie in 2010; stepdaughter Barbara Milford. He is survived by his daughter Michelle (Jim) Wiens, stepdaughter Charlene Jalbert, grandchildren Travis, Kaitlyn, Damien, Sara, Justin and three great-grandchildren; Brother Nelvin (Donna), Sister Eileen (Helmut) Manz; special cousin Doreen Luhr and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In keeping with Leonard's wishes, there will be no funeral services. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
STAN - Flora (nee Stanciulescu). It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Flora passed away in the Weyburn Hospital in the early morning hours of November 8, 2005 with her three daughters by her side. Flora was born April 16, 1918, at Markinch, married George Stan and farmed in the Dysart and Cupar area. Following George's death, she resided in Weyburn and Goodwater with her daughter, Darlene and husband, Lloyd Martin. She left to join her parents Constantine and Elana Stanciulescu, husband George, sister Mary (Joe) Dumba, brothers John and Dan and brother-in-law Dale Stack. She was also predeceased by many members of George's family: Steve and Mary Stan, John Stan, Mary Johnston, Bill and Erna Stan, Nick Stan, Eva Stent, Sam Stan and Betty Petrar. Flora will be fondly missed by her daughters Darlene (Lloyd) Martin, Sherry (Bob) Ward and Pat (Barry) Nameth, grandchildren Cheryl Ward (Ken Kroeger), Tracy (Dave) Guilmette, Jennifer MartinMutrie (Darryl Mutrie), Allison Martin, Devon Nameth, Abby Nameth and great grandchildren Kailen Kroeger and a future Guilmette. Also left to remember her include her sisters Sophie (Bob) Petly, Elaine (Bob) D'Angelo, Eva Stack brother Steve (Maxine) Stan; and sisters-in-law Mary Stan and Elsa Stan. Left to mourn in George's family is sister Elaine (Jack) Patterson, and in-laws Ann Stan, Netta Stan, Mary Lou Stan Coughlin, Bill Stent and Con Petrar. STANN - Stefan "Steve" (April 3, 1925 Markinch, SK - September 24, 2013Calgary, AB). Stefan "Steve" Stann of Calgary, Alberta and formerly of Rosthern, Sask., passed away on September 24, 2013 at the age of 88 years. Steve was born on April 3, 1925 in Markinch, Sask. Growing up on a farm, Steve had a love for nature and agriculture. Upon completing high school, he enrolled in the College of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan and graduated with distinction in 1949. He worked with the Conservation and Development Branch of the Government of Saskatchewan before establishing the International Harvester business in Southey with his brothers John and Dan. Steve met his future wife Maxine at a young people's function at Carmichael United Church in Regina. On November 17, 1951 they were married, starting a life-long partnership that spanned over sixty years. Steve and Maxine moved to Rosthern in 1959, a community which they called home for half a century. Following the move, Steve embarked on a new business venture ? building and operating Stann Bros. Hardware & Sporting Goods with his brother Dan. For more than thirty years, Steve and Dan enjoyed serving their many customers in Rosthern and surrounding communities, many of whom became life-long friends. A dedicated sports enthusiast, education advocate, community builder and neighbour, Steve was quick to extend a helping hand to others. He worked passionately to make his communities better places to work, live and raise a family, and he cultivated many friendships along the way with his timely sense of humour. In his later years, Steve spent countless hours with his auction and flea-market hobby - discovering hidden treasures, restoring them and finding happy new owners. We have all been so richly blessed to have had Steve in our lives as a wonderful husband, father, Gramps and friend. Steve will be lovingly remembered by his children Darcy (Mary Ellen), Colleen (Alex), and Darryl (Denita); grandchildren Bryanne and Thomas; sisters Elaine and Eva; and nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. TEASE - Frederick William passed away on February 7, 2008, at the age of 85. Fred is survived by his loving wife Violet of 61 years; his daughters Judy (Arne) Strom of Regina and Janet; grandchildren Russell Forster, Travis Forster and Renee Anderson; great-grandchildren Jade Violet and Owen Frederick, all of Calgary; brother Albert Tease (Daisy) of Prince Albert; sisters Evelyn Johner of Estevan, Bernice Tees of Regina and Lillian Keyes (Charlie) of Edmonton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister Irene Ziegler and parents Gustav and Emma Tease and stepmother Phyllis Tease. Fred was born in Southey and grew up in Markinch, SK. He joined the Canadian Army in March 1943, returned to Saskatchewan in 1945, married his beloved wife Violet Back on June 23, 1946, and they resided in Regina until 1970 when they moved to Saint John, N.B. for 9 years, retiring back to Regina in 1980. Throughout his career in Prosthetics, and as a war amputee himself, he was able to help many other amputees due to war and accidents. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. THURMEIER - Elsie (nee Fiege). Elsie, late of Regina, SK died peacefully on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at the age of 92. Elsie was born on March 26, 1920 in Markinch, SK, to Godfred and Augustina Fiege. She was predeceased by John, her husband of 55 years. Elsie is survived by her son, Norbert (Judy), children, Tricia (Jason) Neumann and Tyler (Erin) of Regina; daughter, Delphine (Jerry) Freshour of Monmouth, OR, children, Dana (Kent) Leatherwood of Sutherlin, OR and Todd (Stacie) Freshour of Keizer, OR, USA; and son, Mervin (Anne), children, Karrie (Stephen) Kelleher of Calgary, AB, Joel (Jodi) of Calgary, AB, Steven (Tanya) of Fernie, BC; and by 14 great-grandchildren. She is also predeceased by her brothers, Carl, Casper and Erhardt Fiege; sisters, Carol Kevol, Lydia Hufnagel and Eleanor Ahl. Elsie farmed alongside her husband, John in the Markinch area for many years prior to moving to Regina in 1973. The family farm was home to both sides of their families throughout their years on the farm. She lived her life for her husband, their children and their children's families. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend. Elsie had the personality to befriend everyone she met and will be sadly missed by those who knew her and that had the privilege of meeting her during her long and glorious life. THURMEIER - Leo J. A. Thurmeier passed away on October 4, 2003 at Regina Pioneer Village. Leo was born at Markinch, SK on December 13, 1922, to Amelia and Ferdinand Thurmeier. He received his early education at the Markinch and Wiley school districts. His high school years were spent at Campion College in Regina and Meunster College in Humboldt. He attended Teacher's College in Regina. He married Doris Lipinski and they moved to Estevan where Leo was teaching. His four sons were born in Estevan. In 1954, they came to Regina where he held several positions before he worked for the City of Regina in the Treasurer's Dept. He retired in 1984. In 1986 Leo and Doris moved to Regina Beach. They spent the winters in Mesa, AZ and the summers at the beach. He was able to enjoy his golf almost year around. Leo was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Martin, and John; sisters and brothers-in-law, Minnie (John) Gress, Molly (Frank) Mrazek, Grace (Oliver) Venne; brothers-inlaw, Albert Fritz and George Bessey; great granddaughter, Lilly. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Doris; son, Daryl (Jean); grandchildren, Michael (Heather), Jeffrey, Jillian (Andy) and Timothy; son, Dwayne (Heather); grandchildren, Andi, Erin (Shaun) and Sarah; son, Bryan (Kathy); grandsons, Chad (Mishan), and Ben; son, Brent; grandchildren, Coby (James) and Jesse; great grandsons, Willem Bolen and Jaiden Thurmeier; sister, Martgaret Fritz; sisters-in-law, Elsie Thurmeier, Jenny Thurmeier; brothers-inlaw, Ed (Eleanor) Lipinski, Joe (Helen) Lipinski; sisters-in-law, Joan Bessey, Millie (Gordon) Mitchell. ULRICH - Ella passed away peacefully with family at her side on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at the age of 99 years. Ella was predeceased by her husband William; children Edwin, Harold and Helene; son-in-law Rick Fuhro; brothers William, Albert, Adolph and Harold; sisters Ruth, Hertha and Alice. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Carol (Philip) Ermel, Loretta Fuhro and Sylvia (Harvey) Halbert and daughter-in-law Carol Ulrich; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Ella was born at the home farm in the Wheatwyn area. She married William in 1932 and farmed south of Markinch until they moved to Regina in 1978. She had six children, working hard her whole life doing chores, gardening, canning, quilting, even sewing with a coal oil lamp in the middle of the night. Later on Ella helped with the Ladies Aid at church and taught Sunday school. She also made many trips to the United States to visit her daughter. Ella always enjoyed visiting and playing cards with family and friends, but most of all she was an avid reader, starting her day with the Leader Post and keeping up with current events. She always read to gain more knowledge as well as just for enjoyment. She spent many hours of the day doing word search puzzles. Towards the end she enjoyed people coming to visit her. URSAKI - Frank Joseph passed away in Vernon, BC on August 14, 2010, at the age of 89 years. He was born at Markinch, Saskatchewan, to Henry Ursaki and Ottillia Wolfe. In 1939, he joined the Regina City Police Service as a junior clerk. In 1941, he volunteered and joined the Royal Canadian Navy. Frank served on two war ships: H.M.C.S. Trillium, a Corvette, and H.M.C.S. Poundmaker, a Frigate, both assigned to convoy escort duty in the north Atlantic. He met his future wife, Anne Irene Boutilier, in Pictou, NS while his ship was in dock for repairs. After the war, he returned to the Regina City Police Service. Mom and Dad were married in Regina on June 8, 1946. Dad served the City Police Service until 1975, achieving the rank of Staff Inspector. As a second career in 1975, Frank commenced employment at the Plains Health Centre. Upon retirement in 1986, he held the title of Chief Service Manager. He and Mom moved to Vernon, BC, in 2006 to be closer to their daughters. Dad was predeceased by his dear wife, Anne Irene, his precious granddaughter, Anne Maureen Hastings, and his brothers Victor and Edward. He is survived by two daughters, Lynne (Brian) Selinger and Kathryn Ursaki and two grandchildren, Kris (Melissa) Selinger and Carolyn (Craig) Clifton. He is also survived by his brother, Harold (Barbara), sisters Helen Derges, Bertha (Art) Davis, and Alma Pasker along with many nieces and nephews. He was a devoted caregiver for Mom for many years. He was a man of honour, loyalty and justice. He put his family first at all times. He was funny, charming and wise. Even though his life was good in the Okanagan valley, he longed for the familiar, sunny plains of Saskatchewan. A celebration of Dad's life will be held on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Douglas Avenue East. Cremated remains will be deposited in the Riverside Memorial Park following the service.
VOELPEL - Raymond Arthur. Ray, late of Markinch, SK, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at the age of 85 years. Predeceased by his wife Lila; an infant daughter Ruth; parents, John and Elizabeth; sister Helen; and brother-in-law Ernie. WAGNER - Darcey Philip, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, passed away at the young age of 40 years. Darcey was predeceased by his grandparents Arthur and Rose Schwartz and Carl and Pauline Wagner. He leaves to mourn his passing his parents Philip and Luella of Fort Qu'Appelle; brothers Darrell (Mary Ann) of Southey, Todd of Cupar; sister Carla (Bruce) Armstrong of Regina; very special nieces and best buddies Sarina and Nicole Armstrong and Kristen Wagner; Godparents Bernie and Angie Soloman of Vegerville, AB; as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. Darcey will be dearly missed by all. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at 2:00 PM at the Markinch Community Hall, with Pastor Bob Langdon officiating. Interment to follow at Wheatwyn Cemetery.
WAGNER - Henry. It is with great sadness and love that we announce the passing of Henry Wagner, late of Southey, at the age of 84 years. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. Born March 19, 1928 to Karl and Pauline Wagner, Henry passed away on Saturday, October 13, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Gerry; his beloved children, son Sheldon (Bonny), daughter Cathy (Dale); his dearly loved grandchildren, Shawn, Crystal, Danny, Amy, Barret, Brenden, Stephan and Stephanie; ten great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law Margaret Hugel; four brothers; six sisters; Gerry's family; and nieces and nephews. Henry lived a life full of compassion, generosity and kindness, and was a friend to all. Henry will be forever remembered and will live in the hearts of his family. He will be greatly missed. Memorial Service will be held at the Markinch Hall, Markinch, SK on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Intern Pastor Janice Whitlock. A private family interment will be held at Wheatwyn Cemetery at a later date. We wish to thank both the Cupar and Regina Ambulance Service as well as the staff at the Regina General Hospital Emergency for their care and compassion given Henry and our family during a very difficult time.
WALZ - Barbara (nee Varls). On Tuesday, March 25, 2008 Barbara Walz passed away peacefully at the age of 98 years. Predeceased by her husband, Karl; sons, Lloyd, Donald, Marvin, Reg and Stan; sons-in-law, Roy and Jim. Barbara is survived by her sons, Gordon (Gail) and Dennis (Pat) Varls; daughters, Lorraine Melenchuk, Geraldine (Glenn) McPherson, Betty Taylor; and all of Barb's grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Barbara was born on October 13, 1909 in Markinch, SK. For several years Barbara worked at the Regina General Hospital Nurses' Residence and at Luther College, before retiring. She was one of the original occupants of the Regina Village when it opened in 1990. She loved her home there and all the people. In 2006 she moved to the Regina Lutheran Home where she again was very happy and lived there until her death. The family wishes to thank the staff of Regina Lutheran Home and Barbara's special friend, Janice for their care and compassion. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 28, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. in Christ Lutheran Church, 4825 Dewdney Avenue, Regina with Pastor Bob Leeson officiating. Interment in Regina Memorial Gardens.
WEISBROD - Alma Emilie (nee Wolf), late of Cupar, SK, born on May 8, 1918 was called home to the Lord on January 30, 2009 with family by her side after a very brief stay in hospital. Predeceased by her parents Karl & Emilie Wolf and brothers Norman & Clifford. Survived by her husband of 61 years, Ernest, children; Ken (Barb), Kathy, grandchildren; Joel (Alexis), Lindsay (Phil) Mitchell, sister Erna (Emil) Wendling, brother Art (Vickie) Wolfe, sister-in-laws; Lorine Wolfe & Stephanie Wolfe and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. WEISBROD - Ernest Conrad, late of Cupar, SK, born on March 21, 1922, was called home to the Lord on September 25, 2012, with family by his side and after a very brief stay in hospital. Predeceased by his wife Alma in 2009, his parents Philip & Dorothea; siblings Irene (Albert) Sauer, Arnold & Alvin (Phyllis). He is survived by his children Ken (Barb) & Kathy; grandchildren Lindsay (Phil) Mitchel, Joel (Alexis) & great-granddaughter Claire; brother Irvin (Lola), sister-in-law Florence and numerous nieces, nephews & friends. WETTSTEIN - Martha (nee Blaser). It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Martha Wettstein on Wednesday February 8, 2006 at the age of 87 years. Martha was born in the Wheatwyn district near Markinch, Saskatchewan. She was predeceased by her parents Lorenz and Emma Blaser; sisters Olga (Goos) and Kay (Stout); brother John and grandson Kyle Sherritt. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years John; children Karl (Carol), Joanie (Don) Sherritt, Lorne (Lorraine) and Margaret Ann (Ernie) Gaschler; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren all of whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by sisters Edith (Lloyd) Morrison and Elsa Lee as well as numerous nephews and nieces. After graduation from Luther High School in Regina (1938) and receiving her RN Diploma (1941) Martha devoted herself to nursing and to applying her considerable leadership skills to improving the care of the elderly in our community. Martha was proud to be the first administrator of the Regina Lutheran Home (1964-87). She served as President of the Saskatchewan Association of Special Care Homes and the Saskatchewan Home Care Association and received the Art Sihvon Award for service in the special care home field. She chaired the joint planning committee of SHA, SASCH and SHCA and was a member of the Board of Governors of the South Saskatchewan Hospital Center. Martha was active in the Lutheran Church, served as President of Lutheran Church Women and conducted leadership-training courses for women in the community. In recent years Martha continued to be active in the community through her involvement with the Seniors University Group. The family would like to thank the staff at the Regina General Hospital in CCU and 3F for the tender and wonderful care that they gave our mother. A memorial service will be held at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 3500 Queen Street, Regina, SK on Saturday February 18, 2006 at 2:00 p.m.
WOLFE - Arthur Karl Wolfe, originally of the Markinch, SK. District, late of Regina, passed away on May 21, 2011, at the age of 90 years. Art was born September 10, 1920 on the family farm near Markinch, farming in the district all his life before retiring to Regina. He was called to Heaven as a faithful servant of God, very peacefully, surrounded by and hand in hand with his family, at Sunset Extendicare Nursing Home in Regina. He was predeceased by his parents, Karl and Emilie Wolf; son Brian in 1992; brothers, Norman in 1998, Clifford in 2002, and sister Alma Weisbrod in 2009. He leaves to mourn his wife of 63 years, Victoria, also of Sunset Extendicare; his daughter Lorna Robinson; daughter-in-law Katherine Wolfe; grandson Warren Wolfe, all of Regina; granddaughter Lacey Wolfe of Lethbridge AB; sister Erna Wendling of Southey SK; brothers-in-law, Emil Wendling of Shalom Nursing Home in Cupar, Ernest Weisbrod of Cupar; sisters-inlaw, Stephanie Wolfe of Regina, Lorine Wolfe of Calgary, Lena Weslowski of Edson AB; brother-in-law Paul Weslowski (Martha) of Moosomin SK; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. Viewing for family and friends will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina SK, from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2011. WOLFE - Sigmund Victor left his earthly home peacefully with family by his side, to be with his Heavenly Father, on Saturday, December 25, 2004, at the age of 79 years. Sigmund, formerly of Markinch Southey District, resided in Regina the final three decades of his life. Sig is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Ruby; three adored daughters, Charlotte Maier (Darryl), Beverly Maier and Cheri Schmalenberg (Richard); grandchildren, Bradley Maier (Michelle Bishop), Kristen Mcnu*tt (Michael), Justin Maier, Kyle Schmalenberg and Kollin Schmalenberg; precious great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Mcnu*tt and Ashley Bishop, whom he also thought of as a great-granddaughter. He is further survived by his sisters, Alvina Ring (Alfred) and Alma Anderson (the late Bert); and also by his wife, Ruby's family: brothers, Bill Calibaba (Marlyn), John Calibaba (Elaine) and David Calibaba (Marj); sisters, Agnes Tudor (George) and Linda Reich (Ray), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Sig ("Papa") will be missed by his puppy, Bailey. They always took care of each other. Predeceased by a sister in infancy; brother, Oswald; mother, Caroline; father, Frank; father in law, Peter Calibaba; mother in law, Mary Calibaba and brother in law, Bert Anderson. The Celebration of Sigmund's Life will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 2:00 P.M., Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2015 4th Ave. N., Regina, SK. A Private Family interment will take place at a later date in Southey Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined. WOLFE - Victoria Ruth (nee Wesloski), originally of the Markinch SK district, late of Regina, passed away on October 10, 2011, at the age of 82 years. Victoria was born July 9, 1929 on the family farm near Red Jacket, SK and farmed in the Markinch district before retiring to Regina. She was called to Heaven as a redeemed and baptized child of God, very peacefully, at Sunset Extendicare Nursing Home in Regina. She was predeceased by her parents, Frederick and Anna Wesloski; husband Arthur, May 2011; son Brian in 1992; brothers, Eli in 1961, Leo in 2006; sister Elsie Neale in 2009; and nephew Leonard in 1980. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Lorna Robinson; daughter-in-law Katherine Wolfe; grandson Warren Wolfe; granddaughter Lacey Wolfe, all of Regina; great grandson Spencer Freeman Hinkley of Summerland BC; brother Paul Weslowski (Martha) of Moosomin SK; sister-in-law Erna Wendling of Southey SK; brothers-in-law, Emil Wendling of Shalom Nursing Home in Cupar, Ernest Weisbrod of Cupar; sisters-in-law, Stephanie Wolfe of Regina, Lorine Wolfe of Calgary; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. ZAREMBA - Lydia (nee Sweitzer) Zaremba passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2001 at Sunset Nursing Home, Regina, at the age of 81 years. Predeceased by her husband, George in 1979; her parents, Jacob and Phyllis Sweitzer; seven brothers and three sisters. She leaves to mourn her passing one sister, Louise Grant of Regina; one brother, Henry Schweitzer of Vernon, BC; also numerous nieces and nephews, and some dear friends. Lydia was born at Markinch, October 11, 1919, and moved to Regina in 1941, where she met and married George Zaremba. They were married on November 20, 1943 at Grace Lutheran Church by Rev. H. Treit. Lydia worked at a furniture store for thirty-two years. She retired at age 62 after having a hip replacement. Lydia belonged to the Disabled Veterans Auxiliary and Army Navy and Air Force Auxiliary. When she was younger she enjoyed fishing and water skiing. She loved to bake, knit, crotchet and sew. She has asked Pastor Koch to thank those dear friends and relatives for being so kind to her, and for always being there for her. Special thanks to all staff at Sunset, who were so good to her. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. in Grace Lutheran Church, 1037 Victoria Avenue, with Rev. Donald Koch officiating. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park.
ZIEGLER - Irene Elsa (nee Tease). It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Irene on September 1, 2005. She was predeceased by her parents Gustav and Phyllis and brother-inlaw Bill Johner. Irene leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 55 years, James; her children: Darlene (Ralph) Munchinsky, Barry (Sherry) Ziegler, Murray (Katy) Ziegler, Delores Gottselig (Brian Senft), Lori (Jim) Masson and Beverly (Kelly) DeDecker; her grandchildren: Carrie (Darren), Janis (Gabe), Bradley, Ronnie, Logan, Kelly, Brittany, Lindsey, Scott, Jodi, Devin, Stephanie, Kelsey, Jenell, Travis and Kyle; and 2 great grandchildren, Matthew and Taylor. She is also survived by her brothers: Albert (Daisy) Tease, Fred (Vi) Tease and sisters: Bernice Tees, Evelyn Johner and Lillian (Charlie) Kee and numerous nieces and nephews. Irene was born in Markinch, Sask. and later moved to Serath. She moved to Regina in 1947 where she met and married James. Irene enjoyed flower gardening, reading, games and family activities. Her grandchildren brought her much pleasure. The funeral service will be held at Little Flower R.C. Church, 420 College Ave. on Thursday, September 8 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Art Vandenriessche, Celebrant. Interment will be held at a later date in Francis, Sask.
